Doterra essential oil for horses with colic

Signs of colic in horses is a very stressful time for many horse owners including ourselves, but is there a simple and effective solution?

Signs of colic in horsesThis article comes from personal experience of treating gas colic with our horses over the last 40 years, so please don’t see this as veterinarian advice.

Furthermore, we are discussing gas colic and not a colic caused by a blockage which will need a vet straight away.

Colic in horses is just one of the many realities of having a horse, of course some horses are suffering less than others but keeping your horses diet simple and hay clean of mold and toxins as well as plenty of excises are some of the methods of reducing the problem.

In addition to the preventive methods, one method we have found that works well is essential oils, however I would like to add that the essential oils need to be therapeutic grade essential oils and not the cheap ones, because the cheaper oils are made to be used in diffusers and not for consumption, especially for animals like horses that tend to have sensitive stomachs.

The first signs of colic in horses

The first suggestion that your horse has gas colic is that they will look or kick their stomach. A further stage will be when they are in distress or they are laying on the ground. If you walk into your stable and your horse does not raise to greet you, there is a big problem, so first thing is to attempt to make the horse stand. Once the horse is standing listen to its stomach, if you can hear a clanging sound like coins being dropped into a metal bucket your horse has probably got gas colic. If it is silent, it is a blockage and you should call the vet straight away.

What now…..

  1. The first tried and tested method is that you need to move your horse (if possible up and down a hill)
  2. Ask a friend or someone in the stable to prepare the recipe below or alternatively ask someone to walk your horse while you prepare the recipe (it will take 10 – 15 minutes)
  3. Offer your horse the recipe and continue walking

This method works very well on the digestive system and helps reduce gas.

Firstly try to encourage your horse to drink, if your horse refuses try warm water and molasses.

Ingredients

Doterra oils for horsesDoterra Peppermint oil or Fennel oil – 5 – 10 drops

Linseed flour – 2 dl

Instructions

Mix the Linseed flour with water and leave until it becomes jelly

Add Doterra Peppermint oil or Fennel oil

Offer the mixture to your horse, it may not accept it the first time, but keep trying until it does. Once your horse has taken the mixture start walking your horse for as long as it takes. This goes without saying that if this method does see results within a few hours and your horse become worse call the vet.

When do I know that the essential oil for horses has worked?

While you are walking your horse, periodically listen to its stomach for the clanging sound. If the sound continues, then continue walking, if you hear normal stomach sounds continue walking for 10 minutes more and allow your horse to rest, however check the stomach sounds for the next few hours. If you wish after two or three hours offer a lighter dose of the Doterra oils for horses colic recipe to be sure the stomach is moving, but no feed for the next 24 hours, apart from a handful of dry hay at feeding time.
