Behavioural troubles

Fear, crib biting, spookiness and worry are all common behavioural problems that can be soothed by doTERRA essential oils for horses.

Different scents can be used for different causes/effects. Each horse is different so it is advised that you trial and error approach in order to see which oil works with the behavioural problems your horse has. However lavender has always been seen as a safe, natural and relaxing oil, so this would be a good oil to start with.

There is a commonly used mix that can be made in large quantities, making it very useful on competition yards or when eventing in teams. This is a very versatile mixture.

Heat in the legs recipe

  • 4 parts peppermint oil
  • 2 parts juniper berry oil
  • 1 part yarrow oil

This doTERRA essential oils for horse mixture can be added to a base gel to make a cooling preparation for application to legs etc. It can also be added to water to dilute and soak bandages or leg wrap in. When these are then applied to the horses legs they will provide cooling properties to tired legs. This is very rewarding and therapeutic after a long day’s exercise. The amount of oil to dilution depends on the quantity you have made etc. An hour applied to the legs in this way will be just what the horse’s legs need after a strenuous day of competing.

Personally we have found that 5 drops of doTERRA peppermint oil mixed with coconut oil works really well for the individual horse owner. Just put the oils together in the palm of your hand and rub straight onto the horse’s leg to reduce swelling.

Muscle Aches

  • 2 parts peppermint oil
  • 1 part rosemary oil
  • 1 part marjoram oil
  • 1 part ginger oil
  • 1 part yarrow oil
  • 1 part lavender oil

These ingredients should be blended with a base gel .

This mixture when applied is a wonderfully soothing and beneficial topical application when massaged in after a tiring and heavy workout with your horse.

  • Do not apply this to broken skin.

Treatment of mud fever

As most of us will be aware there are many products out there that can be used in the treatment of mud fever. These, whilst proven and often effective still use chemicals in one form or another that are usually man-made. doTERRA oils for horses offer a way of treating mud fever with solely natural doTERRA remedies ingredients.

Mud fever recipe

  • 2 parts tea tree oil
  • 1 part lavender oil
  • 1 part  yarrow oil
  • Half part garlic

Apply the oils with aloe vera or seaweed base gel. This can be applied twice a day for two weeks.

Uses of Doterra oils for horses
